Michael Tolentino M.D., Scientific Co- Founder for the Macular Degeneration Association

Michael Tolentino, M.D. received his undergraduate education at Brown University, his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts and completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Tolentino is a recipient of many prestigious awards including “The Charles Schepens Research Award” and “Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine 2010

Medical Researcher of the Year” Prior to joining the M.D.A as the Scientific Co-Founder he directed retina services at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital and helped develop current treatments for wet macular degeneration Including Avastin, Lucentis and Macugen.

Adam S. Berger, MD

Adam Berger, M.D. received his undergraduate education at Brooklyn College, his medical degree from State University of New York and completed his ophthalmology residency at Washington University Department of Ophthmology and Visual Sciences.

Dr. Berger has been honored by colleagues. He is recognized for his numerous publications in the field of Ophthamology and retina and is an accomplished lecturer.

Dr. Berger and his wife, Carolyn, reside in Celebration with their three daughters

Dana M. Deupree, M.D.

Dr. Deupree is a board-certified ophthalmologist.  His area of sub-specialty includes medical and surgical management of macular disorders, diabetic retinopathy, complex retinal detachments and trauma. Dr. Deupree’s solo practice, The Macula Center, is devoted exclusively to treatment of the retina and macula.

Dr. Deupree received his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean in 1983.  He was a Harvard Research Fellow on a National Eye Institute grant in Boston with a focus on diabetic eye disease.  He received his sub-specialty training in retina after completing a two-year surgical fellowship at Tulane Medical Center, New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Currently, Dr. Deupree is involved in an early pilot study investigating a drug for dry AMD. 

Deeba Husian , M.D.

Dr. Husain is the Director of the Retina Service at the department of Ophthalmology, Boston University School of Medicine. She is a board certified Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal specialist.  Dr. Husain graduated from the Jawaharlal Nehru School of Medicine in India.  She did her internship from Newton Wellesley Hospital.  She completed her residency in Ophthalmology from Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School.  She then continued her education with a two year Vitreo-Retinal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School.  She is currently an assistant Professor in Ophthalmology at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Dr. Husain has done pioneering research in photodynamic therapy in macular degeneration; she is actively involved in research on diseases of the retina.   She has written several book chapters, review articles and many original papers in peer review journals. She is the director of the retina fellowship training program at the department of Ophthalmology, Boston University School of Medicine.


 

Kang Zhang, M.D.

Dr. Zhang's research focuses on novel disease gene targets and therapies in macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and inherited retinal degenerations. He has numerous grants from National Institute of Health, and other foundations and holds three patents.

Dr. Zhang has published or co-authored more than 70 peer reviewed manuscripts in top journals including Science, New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Cell, PNAS, and JCI - covering a wide range of topics in genetics, molecular biology, and clinical trials in ophthalmology.

Dr. Zhang is Professor of Ophthalmology and Human Genetics at University of California, San Diego.
